In discussing the story with the editor of the town newspaper, The Gazette, Bill Doakes, he informed the author that there were a number of unsolved missing persons in town since the mid-1900's. It sounds implausible that these situations exist, but they do. initially, and for a long time after the "incident", the boys kept a low profile. they were young and just plain scared they would be implicated in a crime in a crime, especially having found a hidden wall safe's door swinging open and "empty" in the house. In fact, they agreed to never discuss it with anyone unless all three agreed.

The way Mr. Naughton triggers memories certainly has merit. In fact if anyone is thinking about writing a nostalgia piece, this book is instructive. It's also nice to see anyone, much more so someone from my hometown invite us back to adolescence where anything and everything might be full of meaning.Spoiler alert follows. That said, this is clearly the work of an amateur. It does not stand up under close inspection, especially after reading the final part of the book and the author's disclaimer. As much as Mr. Naughton seems to appreciate the movie "Stand By Me" this isn't in that league. See the Matthew McConaughey movie "Mud" (2013) if you want a good recent coming of age story. Certainly no one should begrudge him the modest Kindle price. But if you mus know what happened to the Pecords, you will be reading the wrong book.The pretext unfortunately becomes a let down.

this was a nice story about the author's memories of growing up. I can relate to that era, and the small town I grew up in, which by the way had a St. Mary's church, school right down my street. The retired priest lived next door to us so the nuns would make daily trips to check on him. This brought back good memories for me, but I was hoping for a more gripping mystery with a real solution in the end. I was disappointed , and felt misled as to the real content of the book. Maybe the title should have been something more like Memories of 1959 !
is this a real story????? seems beleiveable just wonder how a thorogh writter would not have checked with the fbi or census records for the pecords,,,, again is this true? very good reading but enough months later to ask is this for real if the author is out there please respond keith_burwick@yahoo.com
I was really disappointed in this story. I can see how people who grew up in this time period and/or lived in the same town. The book description is 100% about the missing Pecord family; the book is 20% about the Pecord family. Mr. Naughton clearly knows how to create an atmosphere and show reader like me, who didn’t grow up in the 5os, get an idea of what life was like.
But the Pecords? He gives a lot of information about his and his friends’ involvement of the discovery that the family was missing, but no real follow up. The best he does is question a police officer friend years later. He could have done so much more…interview older residents, search newspaper archives, look at land deeds (if they owned the house, who owned it next), search death records, etc. Nope. I myself looked up the address to see it on Google maps and looked at what past sale records I could find in a casual search online.
He named the book, “Whatever Happened to the Pecords?” Well, geez man, put in a little more effort to find out!
Not to sure what I just read. Author went back and forth so much that it was had to follow. And when you read the last word of this book, you are no closer to knowing what happened to the Pecords. Very disappointed.
Probably would be of more interest to someone local. With all due respect to Mr. Naughton, as I can appreciate the work involved, his writing was not very professional. The mystery of the Pecords was just a very small part, and unresolved part, of this book.
Having lived during the fifties around the block from Jim in Pitkin Homes ,another war housing project .
Our house was right behind Mickeys.I thoroughly enjoyed reliving those days. Especially the freedom we had to be gone all day on some adventure which helped me much later in life . I did many of the same things as Jim did ...so it seemed so familiar.
We went to high school and college together as well. I would recommend this book to anyone who grew up during the fifties. Those were special times that no longer exist due to the advancing technology and safety issues. The movie Stand By Me was special to me as well, especially the music!
This book is VERY small and not at all like other true crime stories. Packaging, delivery time was all excellent..........cannot fault the company who shipped it..........that was great. However, in my opinion, the author is not a very good writer. As I mentioned, this is a very SMALL book for the money and doesn't solve the mystery of "Whatever Happened To The Pecords?" Not at all your average true crime book. Did not like it at all! Would not recommend to anybody. (
